Although Numinix has a web design team that specializes in many of the leading e-commerce platforms available, we would like to show you how two of our most popular open-source store management systems — Zen Cart and WooCommerce — compare based on design. We know that you want to take your business to the next level. Do so by figuring out which e-commerce platform best works for your business.

Main functionality and features

Zen Cart acts as an online store management system that is used to sell virtually anything displayed on your online store. This platform is a PHP-based (hypertext preprocessor) software, which makes it easy for web developers to script language and modify. Zen Cart also offers:

  • Easy to install
  • Easy to develop
  • Possesses lots of project management tools
  • Supports multiple languages
  • Supports multiple currencies
  • Offers lots of sale and discount options
  • Possesses ample marketing tools and customer communication built-ins
  • Uses a functional template system that makes it easy to control the look of your page

Just like Zen Cart, WooCommerce is also an e-commerce platform that is used for selling products and services, however, it is also an open-source plugin that is used for WordPress sites. It was designed for small to large-sized businesses to sell their digital merchandise, manage inventory and shipping as well as take payments securely all from one convenient place. WooCommerce also offers:

  • Easy to install plugins
  • Sells anything, anywhere
  • Allows you to add unlimited products and images
  • Allows you to show product ratings and reviews
  • Easy to sort and filter
  • Very customizable
  • Allows you to choose your payment process

Benefits of Zen Cart

Zen Cart is a free, totally modifiable software that allows anyone with even a little knowledge of IT and web development to customize it. It supports Windows, Linux, Mac and web-based devices as well as possesses top-of-the-line built-in integration, that runs with a hosting company and lets you use your own domain name. Lastly it also provides you with video-based training to help you understand how to operate your platform to use it to the best of your advantage.

Benefits of WooCommerce

WooCommerce is another great choice for individuals that want to build their own store from the bottom up or for those who want to refresh their existing website. This free, intuitively designed interface offers a wide range of add-on features (membership/subscription management and anti-fraud), making it a very desirable choice for first-time e-commerce business owners. It’s WordPress integration, easy-to-navigate dashboard and SEO optimization options make it a strong competitor in the world of e-commerce platforms.

Both WooCommerce and Zen Cart offer varying pros and cons when it comes to website development. Deciding which e-commerce platform meets your business needs is easier after you speak with a professional about your business goals. Contact Numinix for more information.

  1. Very informative article! I used Zen Cart for 2 years and have just moved to WooCommerce via a migration tool called LitExtension. For me, Woocommerce is more powerful, especially in SEO optimization terms. For anyone who is still considering between ZenCart and WooCommerce, you can use test store feature provided by the above-mentioned tool to preview how they work.
