For ecommerce, the biggest story is the removal of free product listings across Europe.

As of mid October, Google has not announced an October 2026 core update. The most recent confirmed ranking update is the September 2026 spam update, which completed on October 8. It is Google’s fourth confirmed spam update of 2026, after March, June, and August. Each of those earlier updates wrapped up in about three days or less, so this one was noticeably different.

Google described it as a normal spam update that applies globally and to all languages. It did not say which spam policies the update focused on, and it was not presented as a link spam update. Industry trackers saw the strongest movement on September 25 to 27, again on September 30, and once more from October 4 to 6, which suggests the impact arrived in waves rather than all at once. Some site owners felt the effect was closer to a core update, but that is a community observation, not something Google has confirmed.

If your traffic changed, review the pages, directories, and queries that moved before drawing conclusions, and compare them against Google’s spam policies. Google’s documentation notes that sites affected by a spam update may need months of sustained compliance before its systems reassess them, and that periodic refreshes can follow. A dip during the rollout window does not automatically mean your site was flagged. Use the dates as a fixed frame: compare Search Console data from before September 24, during the rollout, and after October 8.

No October Core Update Has Been Announced

Google’s confirmed broad core updates in 2026 remain March and May. Google has also said that its systems receive smaller core adjustments continuously without a name or announcement, so ranking movement outside a confirmed update is normal. Some industry commentators expect another core update soon, but that is speculation, not an announcement. The reliable place to check is Google’s Search Status Dashboard, not forum rumors.

Mueller on Programmatic SEO and Site Trust

In early September, Google’s John Mueller said that programmatic SEO often ends up spam, borderline spam, or low quality when pages exist simply because a keyword combination was possible. He added that Google’s systems may lose faith in a site’s value based on older thin pages, and that earning that trust back takes time and real effort. He was commenting on one specific setup, not saying all programmatic SEO is spam.

Given the timing of the spam update, the comment is worth revisiting. For ecommerce stores, it applies to auto generated category, filter, location, and comparison pages. Each should have a clear purpose and something useful a visitor cannot get elsewhere on the site.

Google Clarifies Its Guidance on AI Generated Content

On October 1, Google updated its generative AI content guidance with references drawn from the Search Quality Rater Guidelines, including content made with little effort, originality, or added value. This is a documentation change, not a new ranking update aimed at AI writing.

The practical message has not changed. AI can help with research and structure, but publishing large volumes of pages that add little value can break Google’s scaled content abuse policy. Fact check AI assisted copy, add first hand expertise, and review titles, descriptions, and image alt text before anything goes live.

Gemini 4 Argon Arrives in AI Mode

Google announced Gemini 4 Argon on September 30. On October 13, it became available in AI Mode for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers worldwide. Google says it handles nuanced, multi step requests and follow up conversations better than before. Early reports note that links appear in its responses, unlike the earlier Gemini 3.8 Flash release in AI Mode, which first shipped without links and citations until Google fixed it.

For SEO, AI Mode keeps getting more capable and more visible. Citations and inline links are where your pages can earn visibility, so pages that answer questions clearly with specific, credible information are better placed to be used.

Google Tests an AI Mode Sidebar on the Main Results Page

On October 14, some users reported a left sidebar familiar from AI Mode appearing on the standard Google results page, with chat history and a shortcut to start an AI Mode chat. Search Engine Roundtable could not reproduce it, so it appears to be a test. If it expands, it would make AI Mode easier to reach from ordinary searches, so keep an eye on how your key queries look in both views.

New and Delayed Data in Search Console

Search Console added a multimodal search type filter to the Performance report in late September. This month, Google also introduced filters that let you group data from multiple countries into a single report, which is useful for businesses selling across several markets.

The Performance report also lagged for about 60 hours over the weekend of October 10 to 11, the longest delay since December 2025, and returned to normal by October 12. If recent data looked thin right after the spam update, the delay may explain it better than a real drop.

Google’s AI Contribution Pilot Pays Publishers Very Little

Search Console includes an invite only AI contribution pilot that pays some publishers when their content contributes significantly to AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Gemini answers. The Information reported that about 100 publishers are taking part, that several small and midsize sites receive less than 0.1 percent of their advertising revenue, and that some larger publishers have stayed out. Participants see a monthly earnings figure without a breakdown of how it was calculated.

Most sites cannot join, but the pilot shows Google starting to put a price on how its AI uses web content.

AI Measurement Is Getting Harder

Three small changes add up to a measurement problem. Third party rank trackers have struggled in recent weeks as Google blocks scrapers more effectively, so treat tracker data with caution and cross check it against Search Console. OpenAI has reportedly removed UTM parameters from ChatGPT results with GPT-6, which may make ChatGPT referrals harder to separate in analytics. And Bing Webmaster Tools added a Topics Portfolio to its AI reports on October 13, which is worth a look if you already use it.

Free Product Listings Disappear in Europe

On September 17 and 18, free product listings and the Popular products carousels largely vanished from Google Search across the European Economic Area. Google’s Ads Liaison, Ginny Marvin, confirmed the removal was tied to the Digital Markets Act. Productrise tracking recorded drops of roughly 90 to 100 percent in Germany, France, Belgium, Sweden, and the Netherlands, with the space going to comparison shopping services. Paid Shopping ads remain.

If you sell to European customers, check Merchant Center and Search Console for EEA traffic changes since mid September, and do not mistake them for a ranking problem. Clean product feeds, accurate Product schema, and well structured category pages still support visibility elsewhere.

Merchant Center Updates Worth Knowing

Google updated its Merchant Center documentation to say that poor image quality will not stop products from showing in Google Search or Ads. Image quality still matters for clicks and conversions, but it is no longer a reason for a product to disappear. The Merchant API also now supports product reviews data sources, which helps stores that finished moving off the old Content API covered in our September update.

Local SEO: Business Profile and Maps Changes

Local businesses saw several changes this month. Business Profile owners now have four days to reject user edits to their listings. Google Maps now requires signing in to read all reviews. Google also emailed profile owners about a spike in spam reviews, and it is testing automatic hours.
