Google finished its September spam update on October 8, tightened its guidance on AI-generated content and authorship, shared its first detailed timelines for crawling, indexing, and recovery, and launched Universal Cart across Google Search and Gemini in the United States.

For ecommerce, the timing matters. Black Friday is November 27 and Cyber Monday is November 30, and Google is now building multi-merchant carts, price tracking, and automatic promo codes directly into search. Product data accuracy has rarely been more important.

As of November 5, Google has not announced a November 2026 broad core update. Its Search Status Dashboard lists the September spam update as the latest confirmed ranking update. Not every ranking movement should be treated as evidence of a new algorithm rollout, and October produced several unconfirmed volatility spikes.

<div style="border:2px solid #1e73ff; It was Google’s fourth confirmed spam update of 2026, following March, June, and August, and by far the longest. The March update finished in under a day, June took about two days, and August took under three.

Google described it as a normal spam update that would roll out to all languages and locations, and it did not say what the update targeted. SEO observers tracked what looked like separate waves of volatility, including around September 30 and again between October 4 and 6, and some reported an impact closer to a core update than a typical spam update. Those waves are community observations rather than Google-confirmed phases. Reports of additional manual actions also increased during this period, though Google has not announced a policy change.

A ranking loss during the spam update does not automatically prove Google considers the affected website spam. Because the rollout was long, the before-and-after comparison is harder than usual. Compare the weeks before September 24 with the period after October 8, and review changes at the page, directory, query, and page-type level instead of relying only on sitewide traffic. Investigate thin or templated pages, duplicated content, scaled content, indexing problems, internal linking, backlink patterns, and possible spam-policy issues before making major changes.

No November Core Update Has Been Announced

November begins without a new broad core update. Google’s two confirmed broad core updates in 2026 remain the March update (March 27 through April 8) and the May update (May 21 through June 2). Since then, Google has launched spam updates but no new core update.

That does not mean rankings have been stable. Search communities reported heated volatility and chatter around October 20 and 21 and again on October 24, but Google’s Search Status Dashboard did not list a new update. Google has repeatedly explained that its systems are updated continuously, including smaller changes that are never formally announced. Some commentators expect another core update, but that is speculation, not an announcement.

SEO teams should keep separating three different things: normal ranking movement, unconfirmed search volatility, and officially announced Google ranking updates. They are not interchangeable, and holiday-season demand shifts can make traffic charts look dramatic even when nothing changed in Google’s systems.

Google Updated Its AI Content and Helpful Content Guidance

On October 1, Google updated two Search Central documents. In its guidance on using generative AI content, Google now says it is critical to manually fact-check and review all AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness before publishing. Google’s change log said the update brought the document in line with information from the Search Quality Rater Guidelines. Reporting on the change indicates the review expectation also extends to supporting elements such as title elements, meta descriptions, structured data, and image alt text.

The same day, Google updated its “Creating helpful, reliable, people-first content” page with new material on main content. Main content is described as the parts of a page that directly help it achieve its purpose, which can include primary text and media, interactive features such as calculators and site search, helpful user contributions, tabbed or expanded sections, and page titles and headings. Google also added attributes that quality raters use to evaluate main content, with effort and originality among them.

The page also gained a new warning about deceptive authorship. AI-generated headshots, made-up author names, or false credentials are described as deception and a sign of a low-quality page. For ecommerce stores publishing buying guides, comparison pages, and category content, the message is straightforward: use real authors with real expertise, and do not invent them.

These are documentation changes, not a new ranking update aimed at AI writing. Still, they line up with the direction of the 2026 spam updates: scaled, low-effort, unreviewed pages are the risk. A human should check product descriptions, category copy, and guides before they go live.

Google Shared How Long Crawling, Indexing, and Recovery Can Take

On October 2, Google’s Gary Illyes presented internal timing ranges for crawling, indexing, and serving at Search Central Live Deep Dive Europe in Barcelona. Recaps of the session reported these figures:

New URL discovery: typically about 20 hours, though some pages take much longer or are never found.

Indexing, once processing begins: about 1.5 hours end to end.

Site moves: typically 1 to 3 months, and as long as 6 months to over a year in slow cases.

Manual action removal: typically 1 to 2 weeks, but 4 to 6 weeks or longer in slower cases.

Spam update changes: typically 1 to 2 weeks to be reflected.

Core update recovery: typically 3 to 6 months, and 6 months to a year when a site has to wait for the next core update.

These numbers come from recaps rather than a published Google document, and they are reference points, not guarantees. They are still useful for planning. A fix made today won’t restore traffic by Black Friday after a core update loss, and a migration launched in peak season will take weeks or months to settle. Plan site changes accordingly.

AI Overviews Now Appear on Most Searches

Recent data from Semrush, SE Ranking, and seoClarity indicates AI Overviews now appear on more than 80% of Google searches, up from about 50% in June of last year and roughly 15% the year before. Semrush found AI Overviews on about 88% of the commercial keywords it tracked, including “best X,” “X vs Y,” and review-style searches. Google has said AI Overviews reach more than 2.5 billion monthly users, so this is no longer an experimental feature. Percentages vary by tool and industry, so treat them as directional.

Several related changes landed in October:

Gemini 4 Argon now powers some AI Mode experiences.

Link changes: Google updated how links appear in AI Mode and AI Overviews again, but said it won’t show click data for them.

Search Console: Gary Illyes implied click data is not coming to the Search Console AI reporting, so AI impressions will remain hard to turn into traffic estimates.

Ads: Google said ads in AI Mode earn less than traditional search ads and is testing blending sponsored products into AI Mode product results.

One small experiment drew attention. SEO Cyrus Shepard used Google’s generative AI opt-out control on a site and estimated that AI impressions had about a 0.9% click-through rate. He also reported that regular organic clicks dropped while the site was opted out, and that AI impressions were roughly 8% of total impressions. This was a single, small case study, and AI Overviews still appeared in the results during the test, so it is not a benchmark. It does support collecting your own data before deciding to opt out of AI features.

The practical takeaway is the same as in September: AI visibility should be measured separately from conventional organic performance, and rank tracking needs context about what appears around a ranking, not just the position number.

Universal Cart Launches Right Before the Holidays

On October 15, Google launched Universal Cart in Google Search and the Gemini app in the United States. It lets shoppers add products from multiple merchants to a single cart, track price changes, see available promo codes applied automatically, and check out with Google Pay. It is powered by the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), and Google named merchants including Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, and Wayfair, along with many Shopify merchants.

The change moves part of the shopping journey away from your product page and into Google’s own interface. That makes the data behind your products more important than the page itself. Prices, availability, identifiers, shipping details, return policies, images, and structured data should match between your website and Merchant Center. Mismatches can cost you visibility right when shoppers are comparing options. If your store runs on a custom platform or feed system, confirm whether UCP support is available and what is required.

Search Console and Technical SEO Updates

Google also made several smaller updates that matter for day-to-day work:

Country filters: The Search Console Performance report now supports multi-select country filters, which helps stores selling in several markets.

Spammy links: Google confirmed that Search Console does not show all spammy links, so it shouldn’t be your only backlink audit source.

404 errors: Google explained that 404s aren’t inherently harmful. Fix the ones affecting important pages and don’t worry about every missing URL.

URLs and crawling: Updated guidance covers hyphens in URLs, and Google’s crawl rate documentation now mentions the Retry-After HTTP header.

Google Business Profile Changes Add Verification and Messaging Features

Google continued to reshape Business Profiles in October. It began rolling out Google Business Home, started testing advanced performance reports, added third-party ordering controls, and expanded AI-powered messaging. Google also added a WhatsApp button to local panels and moved Google Posts higher on the local panel. At the same time, some businesses are being asked for an EIN or government ID during verification, and review appeals are delayed again.

These changes make it more important to keep your profile verified, accurate, and complete before the busiest shopping weeks, when fixing a verification issue is slowest and most costly.

What Businesses Should Do in November 2026

Rather than responding to every ranking fluctuation individually, November is a good month to protect revenue during the holiday rush and tighten how you measure results.

Review performance around the September spam update. Compare the weeks before September 24 with the period after October 8 at the page, query, and directory level instead of relying only on sitewide traffic.

Audit your Merchant Center and product data. Verify prices, stock status, GTINs and identifiers, shipping, returns, and images before Black Friday (November 27) and Cyber Monday (November 30).

Check Universal Cart and UCP readiness. Ask your platform or feed provider whether your products are eligible and what you need to do.

Review AI-assisted content. Fact-check it, review titles, meta descriptions, schema, and alt text, add real authors with real credentials, and remove or improve thin and duplicated pages.

Track AI visibility separately from organic performance. Use the Search Console generative AI reports to build a baseline, and don’t treat AI impressions as equivalent to clicks.

Be careful with major site changes during peak season. Migrations, URL changes, and large template edits can take weeks or months to settle, so schedule them after the holidays unless they are necessary.

Review your Google Business Profile. Confirm verification status, categories, hours, website information, photos, and messaging settings.

Avoid reacting to a hypothetical November core update. None has been announced as of November 5. Keep improving the site, but don’t diagnose ranking changes based on an update that doesn’t exist.

November 2026 highlights how much of search is changing around the website itself. The longest spam update of the year is complete, Google’s content guidance is clearer about accuracy, authorship, and effort, AI Overviews now appear on most searches, and shopping is moving into Google through Universal Cart. Traditional SEO is still essential, perhaps even more so. Search engines need crawlable, trustworthy sites, and shoppers want useful, accurate, and easy-to-navigate pages. The key difference is that these basics now matter across more search and shopping experiences.

Businesses should focus on meaningful data, fix real technical and content issues, and avoid overhauling SEO strategies for short-term ranking changes, especially in peak season.
