Well, there a number of tools you can use, but some simple methods are to check through your websites visitor logs for search terms from your visitors, take a look at the source code from your competitor’s website (Check his title and headline tags), or hire someone to do it for you. The most important thing is to pick one to three words for each page of your site that are the most relevant and give you the most bang for your buck. Then you embed these words into your website. This is sort of like the way the movie theaters embed pictures of cokes, popcorn, and candy into the film you are watching. Two hours later you wonder why you bought a fifty-five gallon drum of Dr. Pepper, a gargantuan tub of popcorn, and a box of Juicy Fruits. For your website, this phenomenon is achieved through the use of tags.

Tag, You’re It!

Listen to me now! The TITLE tag is the most important place to put your keyword phrases on your whole website! Your rankings will suffer miserably if you forget this point, so please don’t overlook it. Not only is this what appears in the top bar of a visitor’s browser when they click on your site, it is also the headline that you see when scrolling through the search engine results. HEADER tags are also very important. They contain a description of what your page is actually about. You want to place your most important keywords in the H1 tag. This is simply the first header and it tells the crawlers, robots, and spiders where the most important information about your site should be. For added pop, you can BOLD or italicize your keywords. See how well that worked? Once your website is tagged, you can put it all together and make it easy for people to move around.

Traversing the Maze

Finally, you want to make your site easy for both visitors and the secret agents of the BSE to use. You should provide easy links to find everything of importance on your site. If you build it (properly that is), they will come. I’ve heard that somewhere before. The robots and such are like guys: They don’t want to stop and ask for directions. You can help them by providing a site map. You also want to shy away from embedding your navigation with JavaScript, and Flash code. It makes for a super cool website, but it also is harder for the crawlers to recognize. Be sure to enrich your link text with your keywords and make the whole thing user friendly. Then both the search engines and your visitors will give you high marks.

So now you have a rough idea of what it takes to structure your web page for SEO. If you need any additional help, don’t hesitate to ask.
