Description
Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) creates a connection between your web server and your visitors' web browser that is secured through encryption. When installed, private information can be transmitted safely and securely, effectively eliminating problems occurring with eavesdropping, data tampering or message forgery.
SSL is a necessity for anyone who owns an e-commerce site. Without it, any piece of personal information can be seen by someone else. Therefore, your customers will not be able to trust your website without an SSL Certificate. Many customers will terminate their order or abandon their cart at checkout if they do not see an indication that your site is secure with an SSL trust mark or verification seal.
Enabling SSL on your website begins with acquiring an SSL certificate. Your certificate will uniquely identify you on the web and is installed on your host/server. Users of your site will know you have SSL enabled when they see a padlock icon in their web browser (or in other cases a green address bar). Once installed, your site can be accessed with https:// instead of the standard http://, indicating that the site is secured by SSL. This provides peace of mind for your users when the time comes to enter contact and credit card information, as this information is secure and can only be viewed by the organization that owns the website.
