How to Export WooCommerce Products and Variations

Last Updated on Oct 20, 2026 by Nurul Afsar

Learning how to export WooCommerce products makes catalog updates, inventory reviews, and store migrations easier to manage. However, downloading a spreadsheet is only the beginning. Your export must preserve the SKUs, attributes, images, and relationships that keep products working correctly.

To export products, go to Products > All Products > Export, choose your export settings, and select Generate CSV. WooCommerce includes this tool, so a separate plugin is not required for a standard product export.

This guide explains the process, including how to handle variations, open your file in Excel, and prepare it for reuse.

Before You Export Your Product Catalog

Decide whether you need a reference spreadsheet, a bulk-editing file, or data for another store. That purpose determines which fields you must preserve.

A product CSV is not a complete website backup. It does not replace backups of your database, uploaded files, themes, plugins, orders, and settings. Keep a recoverable backup before reimporting edited data, and test changes on staging. Our guide to WooCommerce testing environments explains why lightweight previews do not replace full staging tests.

How to Export WooCommerce Products to CSV

1. Open the Product Exporter

Sign in with an account that has permission to export products. Open Products > All Products, then select Export near the top of the screen.

Use this product-specific tool rather than the general WordPress content exporter under Tools.

2. Choose Your Columns and Product Types

For an initial catalog export, leave Export all columns selected. This gives you more information to inspect before deciding what another system requires.

Leave product types and categories unrestricted for a broad catalog export. For variable products, verify that the resulting file includes both parent products and their individual variations.

3. Decide Whether to Include Custom Metadata

Select Yes, export all custom meta when you need additional product metadata. Exported metadata columns use the meta: prefix.

Do not assume this captures everything stored by other plugins. Check the custom-field limitations below.

4. Generate and Save the CSV

Select Generate CSV and allow the export to finish. Save the downloaded file, then create a separate working copy for edits.

Use a filename that identifies the store, export date, and purpose. Keeping the original untouched gives you a reliable reference when investigating unexpected changes.

How to Export WooCommerce Products With Variations?

A variable product groups options such as size or color. Each variation can carry its own SKU, price, stock settings, and image. Exporting only the parent row does not preserve all those details.

For example, a shirt available in Small and Medium needs one parent row and two variation rows. The following simplified example illustrates the relationship; it is not a complete import template.

TypeSKUParentSize values
variableTSHIRTBlankSmall, Medium
variationTSHIRT-STSHIRTSmall
variationTSHIRT-MTSHIRTMedium

In the actual CSV, preserve Type, SKU, Parent, and the numbered attribute columns, including Attribute 1 name and Attribute 1 value(s). Retain exported visibility, global-attribute, and default-value columns where present.

The parent lists available attribute values; each specific variation identifies its combination. Keep variation prices and inventory settings intact, including cases where stock is managed by the parent rather than independently.

For a new-store migration, use stable, unique SKUs to connect variations to their parents. WooCommerce can also reference a parent as id:123, but database IDs from the original store should not be assumed to identify the same products elsewhere. Replace source-specific parent ID references with verified parent SKUs before importing into another store.

Keep parent rows before their variation rows when preparing an import. Do not merge several variations into a single row just to make the spreadsheet shorter.

How to Export WooCommerce Products With Images

Include the Images column when exporting. It contains image URLs, not embedded pictures or a downloadable image archive. The main product image appears first, followed by gallery images where applicable.

For a migration, keep source images accessible until the destination has imported and verified them. A browser-visible image may still be blocked from server-side downloading by authentication or hosting restrictions.

Check variation-specific images as well as parent images. A red-shirt variation should not unexpectedly inherit a blue-shirt photograph.

When preparing data for advertising channels, treat the catalog export as source data, not an automatically compliant shopping feed. Our WooCommerce product feed optimization guide covers additional variant, identifier, and availability checks.

How to Export WooCommerce Products to Excel

The built-in exporter produces CSV, not an Excel workbook. You can import that CSV into Excel for review, but protect product identifiers from automatic formatting.

In supported Excel versions, use Data > From Text/CSV. In the import or transformation settings, treat SKU and barcode columns as Text before loading them. Remove or replace automatic numeric-conversion steps where necessary.

Otherwise, a SKU such as 001234 may become 1234, while long identifiers may lose precision. Changing the display format afterward does not reliably restore the original value.

You can save an XLSX working copy, but export the final import file as CSV UTF-8. Check identifiers, special characters, and column alignment against your untouched original before uploading.

How to Reimport Products Without Breaking Variations

Start with a small test containing one parent product and a few variations. On staging, open Products > All Products > Import, select the CSV, and review the column mapping before running it.

When editing products in the same store, enable Update existing products and preserve the matching IDs or SKUs. For new products in another store, remove or leave the source ID column unmapped, prepare parent-SKU relationships, and let the destination assign new IDs.

After the test, inspect the product page rather than relying only on a success message. Check option selectors, prices, sale prices, stock behavior, images, and add-to-cart functionality. Our product detail page guide provides a useful checklist for reviewing the customer-facing result.

For bulk updates, map only the fields you intend to change. Avoid reimporting an old stock snapshot after new orders have reduced inventory.

Moving to Shopify requires a separate mapping process, not a direct upload of an unchanged WooCommerce CSV. See our guide to safely migrating WooCommerce to Shopify for broader migration planning.

Common WooCommerce Product Export Problems

Variations Are Missing or Disconnected

Review export filters and confirm that variation rows exist. For import problems, inspect the Type, Parent, SKU, and attribute values. Each child must point to the intended parent, with consistent option names.

Columns or Characters Look Incorrect

Reopen the file using a CSV import dialog with the correct delimiter and UTF-8 encoding. Avoid manually splitting descriptions at commas; legitimate text may contain commas and quotation marks.

The Export Fails or Stops

Try a smaller export and record the error message. Ask your host or developer to review relevant logs and resource limits. Investigate suspected plugin conflicts on staging instead of disabling essential extensions on a live store.

When Do You Need a Product Export Plugin?

Consider a dedicated exporter or custom integration when you need scheduled exports, supplier-specific layouts, additional file formats, or automated inventory synchronization.

The built-in custom-meta option is not a complete migration system for complex plugin data. Serialized structures, separate database tables, and extension-specific relationships may require the original plugin’s supported tools or custom handling.

Subscriptions, bundles, and other extension-defined product types also need a compatibility check. Do not assume that exporting their standard product fields recreates all their functionality.

For recurring connections between your store and other business systems, Numinix’s API development and integration services offer an alternative to repeatedly downloading and uploading spreadsheets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I export WooCommerce products without an additional plugin?

Yes. Use the built-in product CSV exporter for standard catalog data, including variable products and variations.

Does exporting products remove them from my store?

No. Exporting creates a file of product data. Importing an edited file is a separate operation that can change your catalog.

Does a product export include customer orders?

No. Product exports are separate from order and customer exports. Include those requirements in a broader migration or backup plan.
