The Five Second Usability Test

Last Updated on May 29, 2019 by Numinix Developer

One great and extremely inexpensive method for testing the usability of a website is Jared Spool’s 5-second Test.

The test is very simple.  Show a page to a group of people for five seconds and then have them rate an aspect of the website on a scale from 1 to 5.  The purpose is to see how effective a web page is at conveying a message in the shortest amount of time.  With only five seconds, the user will only be able to quickly scan the web page for what stands out the most.

For example, you could display your contact us page to a test group for 5 seconds and then ask them “Does the website offer a satisfactory number of methods for contacting support?”
