Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of optimizing your content to increase traffic from search engines like Google to your site. When publishing a blog post, you can use certain techniques to improve the SEO of your body text, tags, description, and images. Here are our top tips to optimize blog images for SEO.

Use ‘alt text’

Alternative text (aka ‘alt text’) is the text search engines use to determine what your image is (since they can’t physically see the image).

To edit the alt text of an image, click on your image and place a short description in the ‘alt text’ box. See below.

Include a title

Using the same method, change the default title of an image, e.g. IMG_131, to a descriptive name as with the alt text. This, again, helps the search engine identify your image.

Resize images

Your site’s SEO ranking is also affected by it’s loading time, which you can change by resizing your images. To resize an image, click on the image and choose the pencil symbol to edit. You can change the size of the image by clicking on the drop down menu and selecting an option other than ‘full size’ . An image with a width of 600px is ideal.

Alternatively, you can use a program such as ‘JPEGmini Lite’ to compress your image without losing the image quality. Do this before uploading to wordpress.
