Twitter is an incredible tool for online marketers. I use it to engage and interact with others, follow thought leaders in my industry and also to generate leads. 
I love using Twitter but I am the type of person who likes efficiency! The faster I can accomplish tasks, the better. There are many third party applications you can use to streamline your Twitter management experience and help you to locate new followers and influential people in your industry.
Here are my top 5 picks:
1. Hootsuite
Hootsuite is an all-inclusive interface where you can manage all of your social media accounts. You can also manage your lists, find people and search via keyword or hashtag.
Some other features:
- Review real-time statistics and export reports.
- If you manage a staff of workers you can easily lead a team and contact them through the interface while you monitor their work.
- Monitor reputation and discover when your user name or business/website is mentioned
- There are also enterprise level functions with built-in security features.
2. Friend or Follow
You will need to know who has stopped following you as you move forward with your Twitter account. Friend or Follow will supply you with small icons of the tweeters who you are following but who aren’t following you back. You can also discover the people who are following you that you aren’t following back.
The interface is simple to use and graphically pleasing. You can also hover over image icons to see instant profile information.
3. Mention Mapp
MentionMapp is a great resource for finding people to follow. Start with a person you follow whom you deem influential. Type this Twitter username in the field and the application will find the people who influence this person the most. If you click on the names, you will further identify new follow opportunities. In the image below, I entered Oprah’s name and it identified the people she interacts with the most and displays this information in graphical form. Be careful with this one though. It can get addicting and be a real time-sucker!
4. Nearby Tweets
Nearby Tweets is a location-based tool used to access tweets and profiles based on a physical location. You can build relationships with people in your area and also monitor real-time buzz. Its keyword search tool can be used to find local competitors, access potential customers or monitor your reputation on Twitter.
5. Rapportive
Rapportive is a useful tool that displays information about your contacts directly from your Gmail inbox. This tool is a time saver because you can use it to perform a quick assessment of new follower emails (you can see their recent tweets) and follow people back without leaving the Gmail interface. In the example below, you can see the contact’s information on the left side of the screen. This is automatically populated once you open the email.
Rapportive is also useful when contacting new prospects or clients. You can identify their personal interests and connect with them on additional interfaces such as Facebook and LinkedIn. All of this can take place right from your Gmail account.
